Stephen Matthews, MSN, APRN, A-GNP, CCRN-K, has always been driven by a desire to help others in their time of need.

“I’m willing to go above and beyond to help my patients,” said Matthews, a nurse practitioner specializing in neurology at Methodist Physicians Clinic. “It could be another call to check on them, explaining a complex health care issue in a different way or holding a hand when needed.”

He especially enjoys the long-term relationships and shared decision-making he develops with each patient through the ups and downs of their health care journey.

“I like spending time and energy to help them and their family understand their condition,” he said. “I use real-life analogies to help tie together their symptoms. I believe a better understanding by the patient aids in the impact they can have in their future health care decisions.”

Above all, he’s devoted to living his definition of The Meaning of Care.

“To me, The Meaning of Care is providing expertise, empathy and compassion in my everyday interactions with patients, families, colleagues and all others.”

Outside of work, Matthews keeps busy by spending time with his wife, two daughters and two dogs. He enjoys watching and coaching soccer, camping and traveling.
