Sonali Deshmukh, MD, will never forget a conversation she had with her sister while in medical school.
“I trained in India, where you learned in English but spoke to people in two or three different languages,” she said. “We were talking one day, and she told me, ‘Don’t talk to me in medicine. Tell me in English.’ That was a very defining moment.”
That moment led to Dr. Deshmukh’s approach to explaining complex topics and building relationships with her patients.
“I try to use analogies,” said Dr. Deshmukh, a nephrologist at Methodist Physicians Clinic – Nephrology. “I try and figure out what their interests are and put it in that context to help them understand what it is I'm doing or what I'm looking for.”
Just as important? Listening.
“That's at the heart of what we do – listening to people. Listening to what they're trying to tell you so you can help them. If you don't listen, you can't get to the next step.”
For Dr. Deshmukh, caring for nephrology patients is rewarding on several levels, challenging her problem-solving skills while giving her the satisfaction of helping others.
“How can I help you figure out what's going on to make you feel better?” she said.
Outside of work, Dr. Deshmukh enjoys reading and photography.

I love this doctor! I feel like she cares for my health and also for me as a person which is phenomenal in today's ever-changing medical and insurance world! I feel she always has my best interest in mind as well as all of my other comorbidities. She works well with all my other providers and there's nothing better than feeling like your provider knows you and I always feel that way while in her office! she is clear straightforward and answers any and all questions asked or implied in a way that I can always understand and feel confident when I leave that she has addressed any and all possible questions I would have! Though I will tell other people about her I hope she doesn't get so busy. She can't continue to see me lol!

this provider is one of my most favorite providers in all of the several providers I see in the Methodist system! She is very kind and very concerned about me as a human and a patient. She listens carefully and responds easily and with expert knowledge to any questions or issues that I have regarding my overall healthcare not just my kidney I never leave the office with an unanswered question or feel like I am not well supported I leave the office every time feeling more sure of myself as a complicated patient to take care of all the issues that might arise with my many comorbidities, including my kidney care for just getting a referral to a nephrologist. I scored the jackpot when I was sent to not only this clinic, but this particular provider!
