Medicine and cancer care are personal for Shelley Booth, MSN, APRN, FNP-C.

“I was guided toward nursing and medicine after my mother fell ill with breast cancer when I was a young adult,” she said. “Watching the expertise and strength of those who cared for her impacted my decision to advance my career.”

As a nurse practitioner in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinic at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, Booth strives for relationships built on communication and empathy.

“The Meaning of Care means meeting people where they are,” she said. “We only get a few moments to make a difference in a person’s life. Sometimes they need information, sometimes they need a listening ear, and sometimes they just need to know that someone cares.”

Knowing she’s made that difference is the most rewarding part of her work, she said.

“My favorite moments have been getting a hug from a special-needs child, receiving a thank-you from a worried mother and seeing the relief on my patient’s face when we corrected a longstanding issue that had been impacting their self-esteem.”

When she’s not seeing patients, Booth enjoys crafting, skiing, kayaking, walking her dog and other outdoor activities. She also loves talking about Jeeps and spending time with her adult children.
