Nick Steinauer, MD, decided at age 15 – after losing his dad to lung cancer – that he'd pursue a career in medicine and find a cure for cancer. But his career path in medicine shifted during his third year of medical school, when he and his wife were expecting their first child.
"I was able to witness firsthand the miracle of childbirth," Dr. Steinauer said. "I then had my first clinical rotation in OB/GYN. It was everything I was looking for."
Dr. Steinauer, an OB/GYN at Methodist Physicians Clinic in Council Bluffs, enjoys all aspects of obstetric and gynecologic care. Trained in natural family planning through the St. Pope Paul VI Institute, he's especially passionate about helping couples through their journeys with infertility. There are few things more rewarding, he said, than helping a struggling couple achieve pregnancy.
"I just really enjoy bringing new life into the world," he added. "I don't mind if it's 3 a.m. – it's always thrilling. And I feel so privileged that by developing close relationships with couples, they trust me with their most precious gift."
He's honored by the opportunity to finish out his career with Methodist – a place where his own family members have received excellent care. To him, that's exactly what The Meaning of Care is all about – "treating patients like you would want your own family or close friends treated."
Dr. Steinauer enjoys spending his free time with his wife, children and grandchildren, particularly hiking in Colorado and playing board games together. He also likes to swim, bike, run and snowboard.
