Marty Ussery, PA-C, believes communication is the key to a successful patient-provider relationship and, ultimately, positive health outcomes.

It’s a lesson he learned while interpreting for his Spanish-speaking grandmother during her medical appointments.

“That inspired me,” said Ussery, a physician assistant who specializes in vascular surgery at Methodist Physicians Clinic – West Dodge Medical Plaza. “I saw a disconnect, the absence of patient decision making and a lack of education regarding her chronic conditions. I knew that being bilingual, I could help bridge these health care disparities for other Spanish-speaking patients and become the provider my grandmother deserved.”

When patients visit him, Ussery said, they can expect a provider focused on empathy, collaboration and compassion.

“They’ll have my undivided attention,” he said. “I’ll listen to their concerns and develop a treatment plan that they not only are comfortable with but also take part in. They can count on me to convey difficult topics in a way that makes sense and to give them realistic expectations regarding their care.”

Nothing is more rewarding for Ussery than when his patients see meaningful results and reach their goals.

“What I enjoy most is the difference I can make in a patient’s life,” he said. “It can be as small as a medication change or providing education about their chronic conditions, or as big as improving a patient’s functional status – affecting their quantity and quality of life.”

Outside of work, Ussery can be found spending time with his wife and children – often at the zoo or Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. He also enjoys traveling, swimming and playing sand volleyball.
