Lisa Poole, MD, became interested in breast surgery while stationed at Offutt Air Force Base practicing general surgery.

"I realized how much I enjoyed performing breast surgery and developing relationships with those patients," she said. "I enjoyed the opportunity that you get for continuity of care with breast care patients that you don't always get with general surgery patients."

Dr. Poole is especially interested in the treatment of benign and malignant breast disease – treating a variety of breast conditions while also focusing on breast cancer and prevention.

"The thing that I enjoy most about my profession is the complexity of care," she said. "Breast cancer treatment is not one size fits all. It's very individualized."

Dr. Poole believes that trust and communication are the most important parts of a physician-patient relationship.

"A lot of times patients don't hear much after they hear the word 'cancer,' so I'm always available if they have further questions," she said. "Having surgery, especially for cancer, is a big deal, and I think it's extremely important that patients feel comfortable with me as their surgeon and trust that they're in good hands."

When treating breast cancer, she tries to make the process as easy and comfortable as she can.

"Unfortunately I can't do that for every patient because some patients need chemotherapy – complications arise," she said. "But that's really my goal ñ to make it as easy and smooth for patients as possible."

Originally from Iowa, Dr. Poole is married with two daughters. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, exercising and spending time with her family.
