When it came to pursuing a career path in medicine, Keith Leatherbury, MD, was inspired by his mother, a nurse.

His favorite subjects in college were biology and chemistry.

"The sciences were what I was interested in," he said.

He was first introduced to surgery as an undergraduate while working in a cancer research lab at the University of North Dakota.

"My job was doing surgery on rats," he said. "I would hook up their liver and do perfusions, and then I'd examine the results of various operations."

But it was a surgeon he worked under during medical school who sealed the deal: Dr. Leatherbury was convinced that he, too, wanted to specialize in general surgery.

"I like the technical aspect of it, but it really is the work environment ñ the people in the operating room (OR). And I like having order. I like to have things go the same all the time. In the OR, it has to be that way." When seeing patients at Methodist Physicians Clinic, he strives to provide open communication, leaving no question unanswered. He's proud to be part of Methodist Health System, where The Meaning of Care seems to come naturally to everyone.

"It's about ensuring the care that I provide is the very best that I can offer."

Dr. Leatherbury, who's been a musician since grade school, loves to play the bass guitar in his free time. He also enjoys staying active and spending time with his family and friends.
