Cardiologist John Henry, MD, became interested in medicine in high school when he saw that it combined his loves of science and helping people. In cardiology, he enjoys the mix of acute care and chronic care ñ treating people who need immediate intervention and then following them throughout their lives, becoming their partner in health.
"I don't think that you're going to get to your common goal of good health if the doctor and the patient don't have a good interpersonal relationship," he said.
Getting to really know a patient and how to meet their needs is how Dr. Henry views The Meaning of Care.
"I think The Meaning of Care is not just providing the best quality of care we can with the best equipment, the best facilities," he said. "But I think it's about doing the little things. It's about talking to the patient. It's about listening to the patient. It's about finding out what their life's like, what their work's like, what their family's like. Seeing how we can integrate their whole life into their care, and also providing the resources that they need."
Coming from a family of teachers, he values clear communication and tries to educate his patients.
"We will talk about the reasons why we're implementing different therapies," he said. "We'll talk about disease processes so they understand a little better about what's going on and how they can make their lives better."
Dr. Henry enjoys performing procedures such as cardiac catheterizations and echocardiograms, and he has a special interest in nuclear medicine and lipids. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and seven children, who keep him busy with sports and music.
"Our life isn't just in the hospital," he said. "It's large outside the hospital, too."

Dr Henry has been my cardiologist for over 20 years and I can say with full confidence that he is the best Dr I have ever had. I can not imagine going to another cardiologist ever.
