James Sorrell, MD

Dr. James H. Sorrell is a psychiatrist based at the Methodist Fremont Health Behavioral Health outpatient clinic. He majored in philosophy and history as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before attending medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). He completed an internship and residency at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He also completed a residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis.

He spent 20 years as a member of the UNMC faculty and working with the medical center's organ transplant program. He also has served as a consultant for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, assisting with child services and people with developmental disabilities.

Dr. Sorrell specializes in helping patients with brain injuries, developmental disabilities and complex mood disorders like depression.

"I'm very interested in that connection between people's character – who they are, what they bring to the experience of a psychiatric illness – and trying to work inside their experience, meet them where they are and help them move forward," he said.

Whatever the challenge, Dr. Sorrell is committed to working side by side with each patient to find long-term solutions.

"They're going to get the real me," he said. "They're going to get my attentiveness. They're going to get every best effort that I have, and they're going to get the answers that I know. And then the ones I don't have answers for, I'm going to explore. They're going to hear some 'I don't knows,' and they're going to hear some 'Maybes.' But what they're going to get the next time is the best answers I have."

Dr. Sorrell has five daughters and six grandchildren. Outside of work, his hobbies include running, cycling, reading and cooking.
