For Jaki Kenney, MSN, AGNP-C, meeting with patients is about more than just discussing their health.

"I love being able to develop continuing relationships with patients," said Kenney, a nurse practitioner in the Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Clinic at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center. "I enjoy taking the time to sit with patients, validate their concerns and fears, and assure them that they are in the best place for their cancer care."

Getting to know her patients and seeing them thrive are what make oncology nursing so rewarding, she said. There are difficult moments, too, but they also allow her to show patients The Meaning of Care.

"When a patient is first faced with a cancer diagnosis, the unknowns can be difficult," she said. "I have the opportunity to give them comfort and answer their questions. A provider can explain the different treatment options available, but each patient has a right to accept or decline."

She added: "The Meaning of Care means to give the highest level of care to every patient I come in contact with. I feel that it means to treat every patient, family member or coworker with the utmost respect."

Kenney grew up in Dodge, Nebraska. She enjoys spending time with her husband, their two children and their extended family. She also likes trying new recipes, being active in her faith and working in the yard.
