J. David Guo, MD, DDS, considers it a privilege to care for patients throughout their cancer journeys.

“Our patients deal with disease processes that affect essential functions, such as speech, swallowing, breathing and appearance,” said Dr. Guo, a surgeon with the Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Clinic at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center. “My work allows me to combine complex, technically demanding surgeries with the opportunity to make a profound difference in their lives. Being present for them in their most vulnerable moments – and playing a role in their healing – is deeply rewarding.”

Dr. Guo took a unique path to head and neck oncology, first training as a dentist and then a maxillofacial surgeon. Today, he specializes in ablative and reconstructive procedures for head and neck cancer patients. He also cares for patients with benign conditions, such as jaw tumors and cysts. Dr. Guo has a special interest in reconstructive jaw surgeries to treat sleep apnea and address dento-facial differences. Additionally, he’s fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

“I love being in the operating room,” he said. “But the best part of my job is seeing patients in that first or second post-operative appointment – when I see that what we've done was successful and that they're doing well and starting to get back to their daily lives. It's truly a joy to share that journey with the patients.”

Outside of work, Dr. Guo can be found taking in all that Omaha has to offer with his wife and two sons. They especially enjoy going out to eat, hiking and exploring parks around town.
