Gerald Keasling, MD, an OB/GYN with Methodist Physicians Clinic Women's Center, spent one summer out of college working as an engineer before he decided he wanted a profession that allowed him to help more people.
He was accepted into medical school and decided during his OB/GYN rotation that he liked helping people who were generally well.
"When OB/GYN patients get sick, they can be very sick," he said. "But I do like to care for patients that are usually happy and healthy."
Dr. Keasling has a special interest in robotic surgeries. He values the comfort and outcomes that such minimally invasive technology has provided his patients. With over 40 years of experience, he said the best part of his career has been the generational care he's been able to provide.
"I was delivering the baby of a patient one time, and it was her second child. She told me that I had delivered her and that I had also delivered her husband. So, I had an entire family that I had delivered. I think that was one of the most fun things that anyone had ever said to me."
He's inspired to work for a health system that places such high importance on quality patient care, and he values the Methodist culture. When it comes to a successful patient-provider relationship, he believes trust is key.
"They have to know that I'm listening to them and that I'm concerned about what their concerns are. It's good to be competent, but it all boils down to trust."
In his free time, he enjoys working in his yard and spending time with his family.
"I spend so much time away from them, I want to be with them whenever I'm able to."
