Elizabeth Nutty, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, decided to pursue a career in medicine because of the exceptional care her family members received during their cancer journeys.

“I grew up with every member of my immediate family receiving a cancer diagnosis,” she said. “I saw the great care my family members received in the clinic and hospital settings, and I knew I wanted to provide the same compassionate care in my career.”

Today, Nutty is a nurse practitioner with the Hereditary Cancer Risk Program at the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Cancer Center.

“My favorite part of my job is interacting with people and having the chance to make a difference in their lives,” she said.

The Nebraska Methodist College graduate has a unique perspective because she has a BRCA1 gene mutation, putting her at a high risk for breast cancer and other cancers.

“My experiences reinforce that hereditary cancer risk isn’t just a medical issue; it’s psychological, relational and existential,” Nutty said. “Genetic testing has changed my life in a positive way, and I want to be able to make that same impact on others. I don’t just counsel patients about hereditary cancer; I’m able to walk alongside them with insight that can’t be learned from textbooks alone.”

Outside the clinic, Nutty enjoys traveling, reading and exploring “the great food scene Omaha has to offer.”  She lives in Omaha with her husband and their golden retriever.
