Daniela Cortes, MD, grew up in an immigrant family and was inspired to pursue a career in medicine after seeing family members struggle to navigate the healthcare system.

“My goals as a physician are to explain things thoroughly, make patients feel like their questions matter and never allow them to feel like an inconvenience,” said Dr. Cortes, a family medicine provider with Methodist Physicians Clinic – Jennie Edmundson Medical Plaza.

“One of the things that really sticks with me is the face that patients often have whenever I walk into a room and – whether they're expecting it or not – they hear me speak Spanish,” said Dr. Cortes, who is fluent in English and Spanish. “There's a lightness to the room, and suddenly it feels safer and they're able to ask whatever was weighing heavy on their minds.”

She enjoys helping patients manage chronic diseases – like diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity – and is passionate about navigating substance use disorders with medication-assisted treatments and harm-reduction techniques. She also likes women’s health, including contraception counseling and menopause management as well as LGBTQ+ inclusive primary care.

“One of my favorite things to do is empower patients and give them the tools to lead their healthiest lives. And sometimes that involves going back to the basics,” she said.

Dr. Cortes also enjoys completing procedures such as toenail removals, joint injections, skin biopsies, laceration repairs and Nexplanon insertion and removals.

“You can go from one room that's one condition to a completely unrelated thing where you're using your hands instead of counseling a patient,” she said. “That variation gets me excited to go to work every day.”

When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Cortes – who has lived in the Omaha area for more than 20 years – enjoys spending time with family and friends, exploring restaurants, and being entertained by her two orange cats. She also likes staying active, especially participating in hot yoga.
