Christy Baker, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, was inspired to pursue a nursing career at a young age, when she witnessed the caring support that her grandfather’s medical team provided during his cancer journey.

It wasn’t until nursing school though – when she was briefly introduced to the topic of kidney disease – that she decided to specialize in nephrology.

“After learning about the kidney and its vast functions, I was intrigued to learn more,” she said.

As a nurse practitioner at Methodist Physicians Clinic – Nephrology, Baker has extensive knowledge in the treatment of kidney failure. She enjoys educating patients on their treatment options – especially topics related to dialysis. Her daily interactions and conversations with patients, she said, make her job most rewarding.

“Each time you listen attentively to a patient, demonstrate compassion, explain complex information simply, respect their cultural differences and work collaboratively with them, you build upon that relationship,” Baker said. “And that relationship often determines the kind of impact you have on their health journey.”

Her personal mission of putting others first aligns with The Meaning of Care, she said, which makes Methodist the best place to work and receive care.

“I’m here because I want to work for an organization that takes care of me as an employee and the people I provide care to.”

When it comes to her free time, Baker likes spending it outside and with her family. She especially enjoys hiking, swimming and exploring nature.
