Cam Nguyen, MD

Inspired by his older brother, an infectious disease physician, Cam Nguyen, MD, decided to pursue a career in medicine as an undergrad. With an interest in general surgery, he applied to medical school with the goal of becoming a surgical oncologist.

He changed his mind in residency.

"Sometimes a surgeon cannot remove some tumor," said Dr. Nguyen, a radiation oncologist at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center. "That's where radiation oncology comes in. It can accomplish quite a bit of tumor control and organ preservation."

Dr. Nguyen completed a brachytherapy fellowship and has special interests in treating head and neck and gynecologic cancers.

"The complexities involved with those cancers require working closely with other physicians," he said. "And at Methodist, I think we have a very good team working together for the best outcome of the patient."

When it comes to quality patient care, his approach is anything but fast-paced.

"My job is basically to put patients at ease. Cancer is a very difficult diagnosis to deal with, so I basically sit down with them, slow everything down and just be a good listener."

When he's not guiding patients through treatment, Dr. Nguyen enjoys jogging, reading, woodworking and playing music. He's also passionate about helping refugees from other countries become acclimated to the Omaha community.
