Audai Ma’ayah, MD, who grew up in Jordan but has spent more than a decade in the Midwest, believes that one of the most meaningful parts of nephrology is the patient-provider connection that develops as a result of long-term care.

“These long-term relationships give you the chance to truly know and support your patients, which is something I deeply value,” he said.

Dr. Ma’ayah, a nephrologist with Methodist Physicians Clinic – Nephrology, has a strong interest in educating patients about in-home dialysis.

“I think the impact of home dialysis on a patient’s life is amazing,” he said. “A high percentage of the patient population – even those with kidney diseases – are not aware that we can achieve dialysis at home without having to go to a dialysis center.”

He finds it rewarding to discover the correct diagnosis and guide patients to a treatment plan that will improve their quality of life.

Dr. Ma’ayah enjoys collaborating with other Methodist providers to provide optimal care.

“One of the unique things for nephrology is that we really work together with other specialties,” he said. “On the inpatient side, we work closely with the critical care team, having patients on continuous dialysis. In the outpatient setting, we have a great relationship with primary care doctors because the majority of patients have other diseases like hypertension or diabetes. And having those diseases managed and controlled is a main goal in treating kidney diseases.”

Outside of work, Dr. Ma’ayah, who is fluent in English and Arabic, enjoys kayaking, paddleboarding, biking and playing the Arabic darbuka, or drum.
