Ashtyn Nelson, MD, believes that two personal experiences forged her interest in medicine. First, as a child, she had a kidney removed.

“I remember recognizing how much the healthcare team not only helped me feel better physically but also helped put my family at ease during a difficult and uncertain time,” she said. “That experience stayed with me, and I knew I wanted to be able to provide that same sense of care and reassurance to others someday.”

Years later, her grandmother’s battle with breast cancer – and her decision to end treatment – solidified Dr. Nelson’s decision to pursue a medical career.

“Being able to experience that journey alongside her was incredibly eye-opening,” she said. “I saw firsthand that being a physician is about so much more than diagnosing and treating disease. It’s about helping people and their families navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives, providing guidance when decisions are complicated, and simply being there when people need someone they can trust.”

Dr. Nelson specializes in pediatrics and internal medicine at Methodist Physicians Clinic - North Streams and cares for patients of all ages. She’s passionate about preventive care as well as helping young patients with the transition of care that can come with adolescence. Regardless of a patient’s age or circumstances, she wants to establish a relationship that’s built on trust.

“You really have to listen to your patients and understand who they are as a person – what their goals are, what their fears are,” she said. “I’m here to support my patients, and I won’t give up on them. Even when the solution to their problem is not an easy one or the path to their end goal is not a straight line, I'm there to walk with them through that journey.”

Dr. Nelson considers herself a “Nebraska girl through and through” and is proud of her small-town upbringing and values.

“Treating people with kindness, showing up for others, working hard and caring about your community continue to shape who I am personally and professionally,” she said.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son.
