Andrew M. Coughlin, MD

Dr. Andrew Coughlin, a head and neck surgical oncologist at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center and Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, loves the connections he makes with his patients.

"The thing I enjoy the most about my profession is building lifelong relationships with patients and their families. It's what gives me meaning in my day-to-day care, and it's the part of my job that I love more than anything."

Dr. Coughlin specializes in robotic surgery for oropharyngeal cancers; complex head and neck microvascular reconstruction; complex skin cancer therapy and reconstruction; salivary gland tumors with sialendoscopy; and endoscopic skull-based surgeries for conditions such as pituitary tumors and sinonasal tumors.

He studied as an undergraduate at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center.

He's committed to a team approach to care, and he values input from patients and families.

"I oftentimes tell patients that I don't want them to think I make them do what I suggest," Dr. Coughlin said. "I give patients individualized recommendations based on multidisciplinary tumor board discussions. It's a team effort to come up with the best approach for each person. It's then up to the patient to make their treatment decisions based on those recommendations."

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He enjoys running, biking and playing soccer. Dr. Coughlin describes himself as "a Midwest boy" ñ he grew up in Council Bluffs and met his wife in Lincoln.

"We love it here and don't plan on ever going anywhere else."
